Conisborough’s Plight.
Two Alternatives to Rate Increase of 9d. In £.
Commenting on the fact that as a result of the reductions in colliery assessments the Conisborough Urban Council faced with a loss equivalent to a rate of 9d. in the £ on the district, the Surveyor (Mr. Thirlwell) told a “Telegraph” correspondent yesterday that there was no need for alarm on the part of the ratepayers.
He said that even if the deputation from the Council, which is to meet the County Valuer, failed to get the loss restored there were still two alternatives to putting the loss wholly on the ratepayers.
The Council might curtail projected schemes to balance their decreased revenue, or could meet it out of their working balance of £6,000, which might be augmented by £2,000 arrears of rates.
The Surveyor added that the £543 excess of expenditure over income during the first half year was accounted for by the fact that more road works had been carried out in that period than would be necessary in the second half year.
