Conisbro’ Church of England Temperance Society

On Tuesday evening the above Society held a public meeting in the Church Sunday School. The Chair was occupied by the Rev. J. G. Wood, and Mr. Wood presided at the Harmonium.

The rev. gentleman addressed the meeting in a very able manner, and compared the drinking habits of the land to being as destructive an affliction to the church and family as to the one afflicted with palsy of old.

There were some interesting recitations given by the members of the Band of Hope. Messrs. E. Badger and A. Wilde enlivened the meeting by singing. Mr. W. J. Gill, of Mexbro’, contributed a reading, and also the chairman.

Altogether a very instructive and agreeable evening was spent. There was one thing that must have sadly marred the pleasure of the meeting, and that was the vulgar manner in which a band of youths stamped upon the floor between each portion of the programme.
