Conisbrough C. C. Standard ‘Improving Year by Year’
Speaking at the annual dinner of Conisbrough cricket club on Saturday, Mr FC Bagshaw, president of the Doncaster league, said how surprised he was that there had not been more national funds for Len Hutton. “If every cricketer in Yorkshire were to give one shilling, there would be an enormous fund for him.” He said.
On the subject of County Cricket umpires, he said they were no better than Doncaster league umpires.
“I hope the general standard of cricket in the league is not deteriorating; the spirit in which the games are played certainly is not deteriorating,” he said.
Replying, first-team captain, Mr Wilfred Hepworth, said the standard of play in the league was not deteriorating and the standard of Conisbrough CC play was improving year by year. He said the Doncaster provided some really key matches and although the matches were played for points, they were also played as “friendlies.”
“The league provides for players a stepping stone to greater things,” he said.
Chairman of the Urban Council, Councillor George Cheshire J.P. said the club had had a very good season. There was some promising youngsters in the sides and he was sure some of them would soon be a credit to the club.
