Conisbrough Castle – Public Custody

Conisbrough Castle

I am glad to learn that there is a likelihood of Conisbrough Castle coming into public custody, the local authority having been offered the freehold at a nominal price.

We should have been even better pleased to hear that this interesting relic of feudalism have been presented to the nation for preservation.

The keep is substantially all that is left of a noble specimen of Norman military architecture.

The ruin also gathers glamour, from Scots “Ivanhoe” but even without historic or romantic background it is a beautiful site which may in future be more freely used for public assembly and resort.

It has fine possibilities as a setting for pageantry and music. After 800 years it may be coming into its own.
