Conisbrough & Denaby Coal Queen

Ira Panther (18) 39, the Cresent Conisbrough, a Mexborough hairdresser, was chosen on Friday from 15 competitors at Conisbrough and Denaby’s Coal Queen for 1948. In the final with the new Queen was Edithea Rose (21) 17 Bolton Street Denaby, ICI factory worker at old Denaby.

The new Queen’s father is a surface worker at Denaby Main colliery. Selection was made at a dance attended by nearly 500 people held by the Urban District Council in the Bath Hall, Denaby.

Judges were Miss Adams J Halford, CJ Pickett, J Hall, JA Jolley and T Hughes.

The following evening Miss Panther, a member of the South Yorkshire Musical Comedy comedy Society with whom she played in “The student Prince” and the pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk,” was crowned by Mrs Roberts, wife of councillor B Roberts J.P.(Urban Council Chairman) to the cheers of more than 450 dancers.

The Queen was attended by Mrs Hall and Mrs Hughes and the Crown bearer was little Miss Knowles (Denaby). Mrs Roberts was presented with a bouquet by Mr Jill Marshall, Conan Rd, Conisbrough.
