A Union Jack was hoisted last week outside 33, Prior Road, Conisbrough, the home of Mr and Mrs J Madin, to welcome home their younger son, leading Stoker Pete Madin, whom they have not seen for 2 ½ years. Leading Stoker Madin, who, in March will have had seen three years service in the Royal Navy, in which he volunteered to serve, has been engaged in mine sweeping all this time and has undergone some hazardous experiences.

He has been engaged in the Mediterranean theatre, in which he helped to sweep the mines from the areas around Italy, Malta, Greece, Crete and the Dardanelles. He was in the leading flotilla engaged in the Anzio beachhead landings, and the flotilla he has just left established a record by exploding 2000 mines in the Italian area.

Leading Stoker Madin, an old boy of Conisbrough Modern School spent the last three Christmases at Naples, but he is now looking forward to greeting his brother, P.O. J Madin, D.S.M. for his delayed 21st birthday celebrations. Leading Stoker Madin was 21 last October, and although he is due to return from leave on February 18, is all for the Navy authorities will bring forward the date of his brothers leave from February 23 so that they may be at home together.

Leading Stoker Madin, whose father is in his 17th year as secretary of the Cadeby Main branch of the National Union of Mineworkers, was employed as a joiner by the Denaby and Cadeby Cottage Repair section before he joined the Navy.
