Conisbrough News – Strawbridge Memorial Window –“Bow” Bridge – Mothers Union

The arrangements for the dedication of the Strawbridge memorial window in the Parish Church, which is to cost £150 are now completed. The window is in memory of the late Rev. W. A. Strawbridge, vicar of Conisboro’ who died two years ago, and is to be dedicated by the Bishop of Sheffield on Tuesday evening, October 23rd, which is very near the second anniversary of Mr. Strawbridge’s death. Mrs. Strawbridge is hoping to be present at the service, and many of Mr. Strawbridge’s friends from neighbouring parishes. Archdeacon Sandford will assist at the service, which commences at 7.30.

Where has the river Don gone? The question is prompted by a statement read this week that “the bridge over the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal at Warmsworth, near Conisboro’, known as Bow Bridge or Rainbow Bridge, has just I been completed as far as the main span is concerned.

I was under the impression that the waterway at that point was ‘river” and not “canal,” and I have never yet heard the bridge referred to as “Bow” bridge, even by the laziest. I also have an idea that four arched girders were removed, though the report I refer to speaks of three. I believe there was one under each rail, just as with the new 50-ton girders, which are of the plate type and 113 feet long. They each weigh 50 tons, and are the largest girders that have been transported, over the L.N.E.R. system.

During the summer the local branch of the Mothers’ Union have been busy making maternity bags for the use of needy persons in the parish. Adult members of St. Peter’s Guild have raised over £5 to purchase linen for the altar.
