Conisbrough Notes
Litter.
There has been much criticism of the newcomers on the National Coal Board’s housing estate at Ellershaw Lane, Conisbrough, from local education committees and various other organisations.
We had been told from time to time that the people have failed to send children to school regularly. But one thing the people of the new estate are not responsible for if the collection of litter and proper upkeep of roads.
Twice this week I had been on the estate (writes a South Yorkshire Times reporter) and I have been appalled at all the bits of paper, broken glass, pieces of wood, and layers of dust in tree named thoroughfares.
Admittedly, it is the responsibility of the residents to keep their places tidy as possible by maintaining careful habits… But all that paper let’s hope something will be done. I have noticed that many menfolk have been busy on gardens and some are very neat.
At the castle.
Hundreds of visitors have been arriving at Conisbrough Castle during the past few weeks of fine weather. During holiday week the numbers have almost trebled and besides visitors from all parts of the country there have been a number of foreign tourists. The castle seems to be a big attraction to Australian visitors who outnumbered all other nationalities.
