Conisborough Reading Room
Last Friday evening a meeting was held in Mr Anderton’s room to take into consideration the advisability of establishing a public reading room for the residents of Conisborough.
There was a moderate attendance. Mr A Crowther took the chair, and proceedings spoke of the many advantages such a movement as one proposal confirmed on the young men in the village, especially as a counter attraction to the public house.
Mr Colley and others also the meeting, and it was ultimately decided to organise a reading room for the parish, and a preliminary committee was appointed to consider the matter over.
At a subsequent meeting, held on Wednesday, the committee recommended the meeting to accept Mr Clarkson’s room, which was agreed to
The officers for the coming session were then elected as follows: president Mr C Kilner; treasurer Mr Hill, Hon sec Mr Cusworth; collector Mr W Appleyard Jr; committee, Messrs G Kilner, JH Watkinson, A Wilcox, Charles Fields, John Fields, Tom Swift, G Clarkson, Piper and John Jones.
At the conclusion of the meeting nearly 40 persons wishing to join the society were given in to the hon sec and it was decided to open the reading room as early as possible.
