Presentation of Awards

A Suggestion by Ambulance Officer Mr. T. Holmes that members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade should `advertise’ themselves by having a notice or plaque outside their homes was readily taken up by Area Commissioner Mr. E. Soar, who presented awards at the annual tea and social of the Conisbrough Division of the Denaby Corps of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, held in Conisbrough Welfare on Saturday.

Proposing ‘The Guests” Mr. Holmes said “We are not serving the public to the extent that we could because people do not realise we are members of the Brigade. We should have some sort of notice or a plaque outside our homes.”

Mr. Soar said that he thought the Idea a good one. “I have seen ‘St. John Ambulance Brigade’ member painted on a gate and I support the idea for those who wish to do so:’ he said

In remembrance of Mr. Horace Scott of Conisbrough a member of the St John Ambulance Brigade since 1918. members and guests stood in silence. Mr. Scott died on Friday.

Proposing “The St. John Ambulance Brigade” Mr. L. Harvey. Corps secretary, referred to the international, the National and the local fields. He said that members abroad were teaching people in the work of the brigade where it was much appreciated as there was no national health service of the national field he said that numbers were increasing year by year and there were now over 150.000 trained personnel and over 90.000 cadets. Locally, he said, the figures were depressing in the senior services and the figures were the same eight years ago. He said that new men were coming in but there had been no increase because older ones had gone. Although the pits were now much safer they were sill not immune from accident Of the Denaby Corps classes he said that there was a regular attendance of 40 members at every class and interest was very keen. He said one thing missing in Conisbrough was a cadet section.

Replying Corps. Superintendent C. J. Pickett, M.B E., MC., said there was a need for younger members to take the place st the older members “We are complacent because of a highly efficient medical service but we could do more to help the doctors instead of running to them for every cut.”

Ambulance officer Mr. T. Holmes welcomed the visitors.

Mr. D. J. C. MacAskill replying for the visitors said the work of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was remarkably good work and there was nothing selfish about it. It took up a lot of time and “does a lot of good and the members are doing a wonderful job.”

Medical profession in the district for their help in giving lectures and assistance. He said that the forming of a cadet section in Conisbrough was very difficult as there was no permanent headquarters.

Mr. Soar said that the awarding of four fourth bars in one evening showed how enthusiastically the

I work was carried out. Referring to the Denaby Main Corps of which Conisbrough is a Division he said that there was to be a [unction in September to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Corps. Mr. Soar wished success to “the Denaby Corps and the Conisbrough Division.

Mr. Soar presented a long service medal (15 years’ service) to Norman L. Callaghan and fourth bars (35 years in all) to Leonard Ogley, Walter Bramhall, Charles Bingham, and C. J. Pickett. He presented “Labels to Robert Wray. Arthur Sideway, Leonard Ogley. Alfred Laughton, Fred Godfrey, George E. Darley. Albert E. Dutton, Pere. ; Davies, Norman L, Callaghan,

II George S. Brendreth, Charles Bingham, Fred Randall. Graham Townsend, Edward Dale, Tom Holmes and John Hall. Brigade medallions were also presented to William F. Globe and Graham Kirby and class 1 awards to Robert D. Harling (certificate) Owen O’Neill (voucher), Eric Crabtree (medallion) and Arthur J. Tomlinson, Frank Robinson and Thomas Hulse (Labels).

Area Staff Officer Mrs. A. Soar presented nursing awards she thanked all the nurses for their services and expressed a hope that’s when they got permanent headquarters the membership would increase
