Conisbrough take Cross-Country Title

Wombwell  Modern School nearly won the Don and Dearne annual cross-country championship for the third successive time at Conisbrough on Saturday. Nearly … but not quite.

Plucky running by Conisbrough’s Northcliffe School’s team earned them six places among the first 11 runners and the team champion ship while Wombwell had to be satisfied with second place.

First man home in the field of 55—representing nine schools—was Beaumont, of Wath Grammar School but his team were beaten 1 into third place. Beaumont’s time over the three mile course was 21 minutes 11 seconds.

The course commenced outside Northcliffe School and finished in a field across the road from the school. The runners got off well in a massed start but were handicapped by a cold wind. The course took them past Fullerton Hospital and Denaby Woods and when they first came into sight of the winning post it was almost neck and neck between Beaumont and Dufty (Northcliffe) with the former just having a slight advantage.

As soon as Beaumont came in sight of the school he put in a terrific burst which left Dufty standing.

Pope Pious School, Wath, took part in the event for the first time and finished fourth in the team championship and to have one runner in the first ten home. Swinton Modern, also making their debut were sixth.

The chairman of the Don and Dearne Athletic Association Mr. W. Dunn presented the Co-operative Shield to White, the Conisbrough captain.
