South Ward

Counc. David Sheldon (Lab.):

Retired miner of 30, Conan Road, Conisbrough. A member of the council for 21 years and four times chairman. He was employed at Cadeby Colliery for 42 years and was N.U.M. branch delegate for eight years and treasurer seven years.

A Mexborough Grammar School Governor for 21 years, and a member of the Board of Governors of Mexborough Schofield Technical College. Chairman of Conisbrough Primary School Managers and member of Mexborough Divisional Education Executive. A former one time chairman of the West Riding Urban Councils’ Association.

A veteran of the First World War, he was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry in Italy while serving with the York and Lancaster Regiment, and also holds the Italian Croce-Di-Guerra.

Housewife of 69, Windmill Avenue, Conisbrough, will be contesting a seat for the first time in an urban council election.

A nurse for 22 years, she served in hospitals at Huddersfield, Sheffield and Balby, retiring from the profession five years ago.

A native of Dinnington, she lived in Mexborough many years but has passed her 21 years married life in Conisbrough. She has three children.

Mrs. Sheldon, who is 44, is secretary of the Ratepayers’ Association.

East Ward

Mr. John Stewart (Lab.),

of 47, Elm Green Lane, Conisbrough, has the support of Conisbrough and Denaby Central Labour Party and affiliated bodies. Employed at Cadeby Main Colliery, he is a member of the local N.U.M. branch committee. A native of Conisbrough, he has resided for the past 19 years in the East Ward Secretary of the East Ward Labour Party and recently attended two courses at Bingley College and Wortley Hall.

Mr. Frederick Albert Swift (Ratepayers’ Association),

of Church Street, Conisbrough. Making his second attempt to gain a place on the Council. A married man with two sons, Mr. Swift left Conisbrough Morley Place School for work at Yorkshire Main Colliery, Edlington, and later worked at the Conisbrough glass-works. Aged 40, he launched his first business at the age of 19, with premises in New Hill. At the outbreak of War, he was engaged on essential was work, and the business was closed down. In 1945, he restarted his general store in Church Street. The founder of Conisbrough and Denaby Chamber of Trade, he is a former President. A member of the Ratepayers’ Association since its inception some months ago, he is the present treasurer.
