Provision of School Meals

Conisbrough Urban Council received information at their monthly meeting on Wednesday that the County Council was in communication with the Board of Education on the question of provision of meals for necessitous schoolchildren.

Following two medical examinations in the school, nine local children were certified as suffering from malnutrition, and are to receive free meals. It was mentioned that the arrangements were being made. The Council, at their last meeting, made a request that where teachers had reason to believe that parents were making sacrifices in order to feed their children they should be in a position to authorise feeding of those children at school, in order to restore the balance at home.

The letter from the County Authority stated that as a result of correspondence with the Board of Education it might be come possible for the County Council to act on that request

Houses Wanted

It was stated that the Public Works Loan Board had agreed to grant to the Council £31,360 for 60 years at 3 ¼%, five housing purposes, and £738 at the same rate of interest for 29 years.

A period of 30 years was applied for, but 29 was granted because part of the expenditure had already been incurred.

Mr T Sheppard mentioned that a number of applicants have been calling at the Council offices forms for houses present in course of construction. These, however, were for the accommodation of tenants displaced under the Slum Clearance schemes, and it was useless for members of the public to apply for tenancy.

Electric Light

Mr RH Shepard said he had attended at the Denaby Colliery offices as a member of a deputation which approach the colliery company on the question of installing electricity in their houses. No definite answer could be given, but they were informed that the company decision will be communicated to them in due course. A pleasant feature of the interview was that the company proved anxious to safeguard the interests of tenants in asking for a proviso from the Yorkshire Electric Power Company that the tenant should not be overcharged.

Denaby Bath’s

Following a recommendation of the Bath and Fire Brigade committee, the council had to write the Mexborough Secondary School to ascertain if the intended to take advantage of the times available for swimming classes at the Denaby Baths, and it was mentioned that if advantage was not taken of these facilities the opportunity would have to be provided to other applicants.
