Conisbrough Urban Council are to request the divisional superintendent of police to allow flag days not less than fortnightly in the urban area.

At the monthly meeting on Wednesday the clerk (Mr Spencer Baker) informed the Council of the legal position, mentioning an Act of Parliament, which vested certain powers in County boroughs and County Councils, and if any complaints arose as to the frequency of collections the remedy was to apply to the public authority to refuse permits. This they were perfectly entitled to do.

Mr D. Sheldon said he felt complaints were levelled, not so much against flag days as against the fact that they came together. There would be an interval of the week or so and then another batch.

A copy of a resolution by the Barnoldswick Urban Council, “deploring the lamentable surrender of the British government” on the question of sanctions, and “humbly appealing” for a reconsideration of their decision, was received with a request for support.

Morgan: is it necessary to criticise the government instead of getting on with our own work?

The council endorsed the action of the Barnoldswick authority and offered to support to the resolution.

Clerk fees

Mr J. T. E. Collins moved reference back of the recommendation of the finance committee considering the payment of £96 to the Clerk for services in connection with the King’s Bench Division case.

Mr R. H. Shepard protested that the Clerk had done his work and was entitled to payment.

The chairman (Mr Geo. Oldfield) said this account had the taxing officer’s certificate, and although the council had an agreement with the work as to the courts in which he should serve free of charge, there was no mention of the Kings Bench Division. The subcommittee who drew up this agreement left a loophole, it was no use grumbling

Only Mr Collins and Mr Morgan voted for reference back, and the recommendation, along with others of the finance committee, were approved

Housing Matters.

The council confirmed recommendations from the Housing and Town Planning Committee to extend the local slum circumstance from 100 houses to 150 with the approval of the Minister and to erect 34 houses on a site in old Road, and 16 houses in Church Road, Denaby Main for the housing purposes at an estimated cost of £16,850.

Recommendations that 20 further houses be erected to relieve over crowding at an estimated cost of £8400, were also confirmed and here also the council will suggest direct labour. It is proposed to let the slum clearance three-bedroom type houses at 4s. 3d. Per week, two-bedroom type housees at 3s. 9d. Per week, exclusive of rates. The whole or special cases are subject to revision at a later date. Three new roads on the housing scheme are to be named Lewes Road, Sandall Road, and Harthill Road

At a meeting of the Sanitary and Highways Committee, a letter was read from the owners of property at Denaby Main with respect to the supply of electricity for lighting purposes in their houses. The matter is to be left in abeyance. Owners are to be written to with respect to cutting hedges between Holywell and life Grove, Sheffield Road, and out Green Lane.

After July 19th the baths will be close at 5 pm on Sunday evening. A filtration plant was mentioned in the minutes of the Fire Brigade committee, Ben Roberts said he hoped it would not be long before this was installed.
