Down To Denaby: Cortonwood lose first match
A SCORE of 166 under far from pleasant conditions brought a prospect of victory for Cortonwood against Denaby and Cadeby at Brampton. These hopes, however, foundered against stubborn opposition by Denaby’s opening bat, A. Ellis, who went on to score 74 before being caught by Philip Wrightson.
It was no consolation to the Cortonwood supporters to know that he was missed by Eric Peploe at 47 and survived a strong appeal at 70.
Cortonwood went out for their first match of the season with two of their regular players absent, Henry Walters still committed to football and Eric Fletcher and Jack Grice was a casualty and had to be content with watching the match. The Cortonwood innings was marked by magnificent batting performances on the part of Brian Layhe (43), and Philip Wrightson (48).
The Cortonwood wickets were shared by four bowlers J. Crumpton (2 for 55). R. Lawley (3 for 35), J. Kerry (2 for 451, and R. Cory (3 for 24). Denaby’s second big hitter was N. Oakley (38). Denaby’s final score was 169 for five.
THE FIRST BOUNDARY
Most successful of the Corton-wood bowlers was Philip Wrightson, who had 3 for 29. The Cortonwood skipper, Bill Scott, had the distinction of scoring the first boundary of the season on Brampton Welfare ground, but he was subsequently bowled by Lawley, without making any further contribution to the score. Tap of the batting list for Cortonwood was a new player, Dick Balmer, who played for Rotherham before going into the Army for National service. He has youth on his side and should be a distinct asset to the club. Unfortunately he had a hand Injured in this match and had to retire for a time
