Council Houses.

Council Houses.

The building of Council houses proceeds apace, but it doubtful whether some of the houses which are being built are all suitable for relieving the house shortage.

The rents which have to be fixed for these houses are higher than can be afforded by the people for whom they are intended. There is a limit for rent beyond which a working man cannot go, and in these days that limit is low.

An instructive instance is provided by Conisborough. There are between 600 and 700 names on the waiting list at the Urban District Council offices; that is, some 600 odd people in Conisborough are in need of houses. Yet in Conisborough housing estate at Conanby fifty-two houses are empty.

The reason is that the rents asked do not appeal to those who need houses.
