Conisborough.

Mr. George Oldfield, who was elected for the South Ward, is a native of Bollington, Cheshire.

Before coming to Conisborough he lived at Roman Terrace, Swinton, for 30 years, and worked at Manvers Main for 23 years. He was delegate of Manvers Main No. 1 Branch of the Y.M.A. when the War broke out.

He immediately left his job and joined the Army, serving from 1914 until 1919. On the Somme he gained the Military Medal, and at Messines was awarded the Croix de Guerre. In addition he was mentioned in dispatches. After the Caparetto disaster he went to Italy, fought on the Piave and on the Asiago.

From Italy he came home for commissioned rank and was undergoing training at the cadet centre at Ripon when the war ended, and he finished with the rank of sergeant-major.

Mr. Oldfield served for many years on the Roman Terrace and Adwick Hospital Committee and also on the Board of Management of the Montagu Hospital. He has resided in Conisborough several years and is an official of the Cadeby branch of the Y.M.W.A. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Don Valley Divisional Labour Party.

He is on the check weigh Committee and the General Purposes Committee at Cadeby Colliery.

His election to the Council is at the first attempt.
