Loss to Conisbrough Public Life

The death occurred at his home  on Friday of Councillor Harry Gomersall (73), the longest serving member of Conisbrough Urban brough Council and well known man in public life in the district.

Mr Gomersall, of 44, Maltby Street,  Denaby had been ill in Mexborough Montagu hospital for some weeks and returned home last Wednesday.

He was elected to Conisbrough Urban Council in 1927 and had served ever since. He was chairman of the Council in 1932 and had been chairman of most of the Council’s committees. He was the first chairman of Mexborough Divisional Education Executive and he served on that body for several years. For over 20 Years he was chairman of Conisbrough Primary School Managers and for 25 years he was secretary of the local branch of the Transport and General Workers Union, a position he held up to only a few days before his death.

He was also a member of Denaby Fullerton Hospital Management Board for more than 10 years, up to the time when hospitals were taken over under the National Health scheme. He was also a founder member and a past chairman of Conisbrough and Denaby Labour Party.

As Chairman of the Council in 1932 he opened the Denaby Memorial Park, through which he was taken for the last time on Tuesday for the funeral.

About 3 years ago he unveiled in the Denaby Memorial Park the memorial to those killed in the last war and in 1953 he laid the foundation Stone of Conisbrough Rowena Infants school.

For over 40 years he worked as a glass blower at the old Kilner Bros glass works in Conisbrough. Later he worked on the colliery housing estate as an inspection officer. He retired 10 years ago.

He leaves a widow Mrs Alice Gomersall, three children and six grandchildren.

Councillor Gomersall’s death creates a vacancy in the West Ward of the Urban District.
