“Father” of Conisborough Council

The death occurred on May 21st of Coun. Thomas John Gregory (59), of 25, Rossington Street, Denaby Main.

Coun. Gregory was Chairman of Conisborough Urban District Council last year for the third time, but through illness was prevented from fulfilling many of his duties.  He was well known in Denaby where he had resided nearly all his life, holding many public posts.  He had been for 18 years a member of Conisborough Urban Council, having served longer than any of the present members.

He was Chairman in 1930, 1934 and 1940, and had been vice-chairman of the Burial Board, a member of the Food Control Committee and a trustee of the Denaby Miners Welfare Institute.

He was a checkweighman at Cadeby Colliery and was also associated with the Yorkshire Mineworkers Association.

The funeral service was conducted at Denaby Parish church on Saturday by the Rev. S. Powley, and the interment took place at Conisborough Cemetery.
