Trafficking In Coupons
Conisbrough and Mexborough Women Warned
Stern warnings against trafficking in clothing coupons were given from the Doncaster West Riding Bench on Saturday when Conisbrough and Mexborough persons were before the Court for offences of this kind.
Mr. M. L. Nokes (chairman), said “It is the last warning to-day. The next coupon case that comes here will be dealt with harshly. You are all liable to a fine of £100 or six months’ imprisonment. Do not do this coupon trick again.”
Mr. Nokes was addressing a 16-year-old Conisbrough haulage hand who was fined £5 for stealing a book of clothing coupons the property of his father, and unlawfully transferring them, and Hilda Soar (25) and Sarah Faulkner (55), housewives, of Mexborough and Conisbrough respectively, were fined £2 each for being in unlawful possession of coupons,
Supt. Walker said the youth took the coupons from his mother’s purse and sold them to Mrs. Soar,
Mr. C. R. Marshall, who prosecuted for the Board of Trade, said the youth admitted taking his father’s and his own coupons and receiving 10s, for them from Mrs. Soar, who pleaded that she “bought them in innocence.”
The youth also admitted selling coupons to Mrs. Faulkner for 10s. He alleged that she asked him, “Can you get me any coupons?”
Mr. Nokes said to the women:
“You know that you can only trade with your own coupons and that this boy should not have sold coupons to you.”
