Cricket Prospects

Denaby and Cadeby

In reply to my request for particulars, Mr. Fisher, the courteous and obliging secretary of the above clubs, says that their prospects, as regards the strength and quality of the first team in all departments, were never brighter.

Happily, the unfortunate dispute with G. L. and A. Robinson, at the close of last season, has been patched up, and, as in the past, the Robinsons will form almost an indispensable portion of the Denaby eleven. Keen, but fair sportsmen, capable exponents of the game, Denaby could ill afford to have lost their services, and we are pleased the episode has been mutually and satisfactorily settled.

Barker, last season’s professional, has been re-engaged, and commences duties on April 25th. He has been invited by the secretary of Derbyshire County Club to play in the trial match on April 22nd and 23rd, and this will prevent him appearing in the first match against Swinton on the 23rd.

Several fresh faces will be seen, notably T. Coleman, a late Lancashire league professional, who has gained repute as a good bowler; R. Bury, a good batsman—a relative, I believe, of the better-known C. Bury, who has this season assumed the captaincy of the team, in which capacity I wish him success. It is a rather unenviable position, I know it, and wish him well.

Other players available are W. Scott, W. Moore, J. Stott, Albert Smith, Wm. Smith, George Hardy, S. Burgin and F. Butler. Denaby, in my opinion, will take much beating for the championship.

Conisboro’

There are plenty of good supporters of cricket in Conisboro’, but, unfortunately, the lack of ability has been conspicuous for several seasons; and the outlook for the coming season is again of the same old unpromising type.

Where are the Sharps, who are really good cricketers, that they do not come forward to help the old club? Then surely there is still some cricketing left in the good Vicar of the parish. Our old friend Norwood, too, must take hold of the reins again.

I should like to see a really good team in Conisboro’. Mat. Harrison has been re-engaged; Geo. Hardy had been engaged as Saturday pro., but it is expected he will play for Denaby, and the committee are on the look out for another match pro.

I hope the youngsters will make headway this season, and give the club a lift up the league ladder.
