Private John Cross, Denaby
1st Yorks and Lancs
Private John Cross, 72 Clifton Street, Denaby main, went to the front in January. Writing to his mother and sister, he says:
“you must not trouble yourself about me. I will look after myself and do my duty here until the war is over, and then I shall return to you and be proud to know that I responded to the call for men.
As a Christian, I thought it my duty to do so, and to fight for the love of my country and for your safety.”
Private Cross proceeds to give an account of a night spent in trench construction under the fire of enemy snipers.
