Crucial Year – Says Fred Walters to Denaby Fans
If the Midland League can hold out a further season, its future is assured. The standard of football should improve a great deal, and league clubs in the area may be glad to re-enter teams.
This was the opinion of Mr. Fred Walters, Sports Editor of the “Star” who responded to “The Visitors” at Denaby United Supporters’ Club’s annual dinner last Thursday.
Referring to the crisis at present threatening the 74-years-old competition, Mr. Walters said it was a “blessed disgrace” that its existence be in jeopardy. The league, he said, had a record comparable to any in the country.
Proposing “The Supporters’ Club”, Danny Williams, Rotherham United left half, said he had been very surprised and pleased to learn that the club with a membership of only 300 had raised more than £2,000 since June.
Mr. G. McNicholl, Supporters’ Club chairman responded. The “Visitors” was proposed by Mr J. E. Greathead, in his tenth year as Club President
