A Damaged Optic

Denaby Man Rough and Tumble

A small man, who evidently can make himself very awkward, John Rustling, appeared in the dock with a badly discoloured eye, and wished to know where and how it was received. He was of course charged with having been drunk and disorderly, and further with assaulting PC Richards on Saturday night.

The officer, at 11.40 on Saturday night, saw Rustling in Doncaster Road, Denaby, very drunk. He refused his name and address, so Richard proceeded to take him into custody. The prisoner, however, became very violent, threw himself down on the ground, kicked the policeman on the legs and body, and struck him in the face, causing his nose to bleed. The officer whistled for assistance and PC Shriller arrived, but as the prisoner refused to walk the conveyance had to be obtained to take him to the Conisborough police station.

He had a bad record and he was fined 10 shillings and the costs for having been drunk and disorderly, and committed to prison for 10 days for the assault.
