Damages against Denaby Fitter

Said to have been absent 28 shifts from a date in July to one in September, Albert Allen, fitter of 23 Barnburgh Street Denaby, employed at Denaby May Colliery, appeared at Doncaster, on Saturday on a summons of breach of contract.

The claim of Amalgamated Denaby Collieries Ltd, owners of the pit, for £10 damages, was allowed with £1 costs.

Prosecutor for the company. Mr A.S. Furniss said that Allen had been frequently warned about absenteeism. He had flouted the Pit Production Committee, by whom he had been fined, and said he wanted to bring the case to court.

A total of 90 tons had been lost because of Allen’s absenteeism, resulting in a net loss to the company of £69 7s 10d.

Allen admitted the claim and admitted been absent. He said he could only work when he was fit enough.
