Dangerous Neglect of Regulations
Walter Kay, “jennier,” of Denaby Main Colliery, was charged with an infringement of Special Rule No. 4 by doing an act likely to endanger the safety of persons in the mine.
Mr. Hickmott, who prosecuted, stated that there were a series of jennies which were worked by means of ropes and brakes on an up and down gradient, the full corves on the down gradient pulling up the empty ones.
A man named Cook, on duty in a jenny below the point at which defendant was stationed, and defendant started his run of full corves without receiving a signal from Cook that the empty corves had been attached. Being a travelling road some lads had to be warned to get out of the way. On finding the empty corves were not attached the defendant did his best to block the brake, but the corves went down the incline at a tremendous speed and eventually left the rails, two of them being smashed to pieces.
Defendant was fined 20s., including costs.
