Darts and Dominoes Are Their Weapons

A good old-fashioned challenge, in the best traditions of English chivalry, went out from Conisbrough’s Eagle and Child Hotel this week.

But instead of lances and battle-axes, the weapons of combat will be darts and dominoes.

Landlord Mr. Gomer Davies explained, “The lads of the darts and dominoes teams haven’t got a match until September, so they have thrown out a challenge to anyone who likes to take them on. We have one or two talented lady players, if the opponents want to throw in a little female opposition”.

Teams of seven – anyone can qualify – are invited to take on the Eagle and Child players, who have volunteered to play the first match away.

Losers pay?

At home matches the Conisbrough hotel will lay on a pea and pie supper – paid for by the losers!

The Conisbrough challenge will be a strong one however. The Eagle and Child darts team has won the William Stones Rotherham area championship two consecutive years, and last season tied at the top but lost the play-off. At dominoes too they took the championships for the two previous seasons.

“We’re fairly confident,” Mr. Davies added.
