Dear Denaby “Find”
A former special constable, Michael Joseph Burley, 55-years-old plasterer, of Wath Road, Mexborough, who kept a £1 note he picked up from the floor of a club bar, was fined £1 and £1 11s 6d. costs at Doncaster West Riding Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, for stealing by finding.
Police-inspector Lewery said Hurley was drinking with a party of friends at the St John Ambulance Club, Denaby, when he saw a note on the floor. He said “This must belong to Cecil,” referring to a man named Watchorn who had just left the club, and went out after the man.
Returning a few moments later, Hurley told the man he had caught Watchorn getting on to a trolley-bus, but this was not so. In fact Watchorn had tried for a fortnight to contact him.
