Death of Mr. M. B. Jones

Mr Maurice Bernard Jones (62), of “Hazeldean,” Sheffield Rd., Conisbrough, a well-known Mexborough fish and chip shop owner for 12 years, died at Wath Wood Hospital on 2nd February.

Mr. Jones, who was born in Stourbridge, Worcestershire, and educated at Bromley, came to South Yorkshire as a young man, to live at South Kirkby. There, he was a member of St. John Ambulance Brigade and also of the rescue team at Frickley Colliery, where he worked until 1937.

He then took ownership of a fish and chip shop in Chapel Street, Thurnscoe, before moving to the premises where he lived for 12 years in Harlington Road, Mexborough. During that time he became well-known for his work at Mexborough Montagu Hospital, where he was latterly a night telephonist until ill-health forced him to retire two years ago.

He was married in May, 1934, at South Kirkby Parish Church, and he and his wife, Georgina, had four children, Maurice, David, Mrs. Pamela Rockett and Mrs. Doreen Mumby.

Mr. Jones had suffered chest and lung complaints for several years before he died after three weeks at Wath Wood Hospital, from broncho-pneumonia. The funeral service was held at Conisbrough Parish Church last Wednesday, the Rev. G. F. Braithwaite officiating. Cremation followed at Rosehill Crematorium, Doncaster. The ashes were buried at Moorthorpe Cemetery on Monday.
