Athletic were distinctly unfortunate to lose 1-0 to United, for they had by far the greater part of the game. The goal was scored by Turner after 12 minutes’ play.

Wath lacked penetrativeness in attack, but the Denaby goal had some very narrow escapes in spite of this.

Towards the close Wath were disorganised by an injury Dawber and but for some fine goalkeeping by Whittaker might easily have lost by a bigger margin.
