Goals would not come !
Neither Denaby United nor Lockheed came out of this Midland League match with a great deal of credit – Denaby perhaps with a little more than Lockheed.
Although the visitors set off at a tremendous pace – they forced three corners in the first 2 minutes – they were forced to slow down later, but again, Denaby’s performance couldn’t get the goals.
The new signing, from the, “Jock” Grierson, was been scoring quite a lot of goals in junior football was brought into the side at inside left, Harvey moving onto the wing.
He showed promise, but wasn’t given much chance to show his ability because of the lack of cohesion in the team.
Denaby were dangerous in isolated attacks, but for the first 30 min Lockheed were well on top, fast and direct, but they were kept out. The Denaby defence did a good stopping job – their trouble was in getting the forwards moving.
It was from a pool clearance that Lockheed got their winner. Foster with time to spare sliced the ball to Hall. Shorthose took the wingers pass and although Stasiukiewicz got a hand to the ball, couldn’t stop it going in, 7 min after half time.
After that Denaby’s efforts were cut short by petty fouls which the referee failed to clamp down. Suspect tackles when pass without notice, centre half Goodyear in particular was guilty, and Shorthose used his arms more than his legs when he went for the ball.
The game developed – after the early promise – into a scrappy disappointing affair, brightened up by Denaby’s determination in the last 10 min, but the goals wouldn’t come.
