Two Catches in Five Overs and Denaby Had Won
Denaby and Cadebv beat Elsecar by 31 runs at Denaby on Saturday, R. Lawley taking the last Elsecar wicket in the last of the extra five overs called for in a bid for a decision.
The close finish provided the only entertainment of the whole match, however. Denaby’s batting had an end-of-the-season atmosphere about it and in the first two hours only 60 runs were scored.
Of the first 72 runs only 16 came in boundaries. Towards the end of the innings, however, the batsmen did hit out a little more.
Denaby were dismissed for 106. Top scorers were A. Ellis (23) and N. Oakley (26).
Dick Lawley soon had Elsecar batsmen in trouble. He took the first four wickets for seven runs and with the score at 28 for four Elsecar had to fight hard. As time passed the game looked like finishing as a draw, but when the extra five overs were called Denaby obviously had a chance to win as Elsecar had eight wickets down for 65 runs. In the first over of the last five McDonald made an excellent catch to dismiss G. Swallow and in the last over Arthur Ellis made a good catch in the slips to dismiss L. Standish off the bowling of Lawley who finished with six for 40 and Elsecar were gone for 75.
