Denaby and Doncaster Races

An Unlooked-for Sequel

Four Hundred Men Receive Notices

The week prior to Doncaster Races, the management of the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries, Ltd., posted, both at Denaby Main and Cadeby Main pits, notices to their workmen intimating that those who absented themselves from work during the race week would be proceeded against under Special Rule 4 of the Regulations of Mines Act.

Applications for leave to be absent were in every case refused, no exceptions whatever being made, while even the company’s offices were kept open during the week.

Notwithstanding the notice, however, a large number of men stayed away from work on one or more of the race days, and caused the pits to be set down on two of the days for want of hands.

These men, to the number of about 400, were on Monday served with a week’s notice to leave the company’s employment, which notices will expire to-day (Saturday).

What will follow is at present unknown, but we are informed that the directors of the company held a Board meeting at the offices on Thursday morning, when the subject doubtless received consideration.
