Denaby Assistant’s Theft.
A Denaby pawnbroker’s assistant, William Greensmith, was fined £2 or 14 days, at Doncaster West Riding Police court on Tuesday for stealing six pairs of socks, valued 9s. and embezzling 4s, the property of J Whitaker and Co., Pawn brokers
Mr C. R. Marshall, who prosecuted, said the defendant had been in the employ of Whitaker’s for about two years, and as money had been missed for a long time a watch was kept by the manager,Mr Albert Liversidge.
On September 21 a woman came into the shop to renew an old pledge. Defendant took the old ticket and gave the woman a new one. When the days balance was made the manager found that the old ticket and 4s was missing. If the transaction had not been witnessed by the manager, he would not have been able to trace it.
When seen the following morning the defendant admitted it and also admitted taking the socks.
It was slated that the defendant was receiving a weekly wage of £3 and a house and light free.
In reply to the bench Greensmith said that he had no special circumstances to force him to take the money.
