Denaby Bell Has Tolled for Last Time
A one and a half hundredweight bell used to call school children to Denaby Rossington Street school was taken down from the school belfry on Tuesday.
The bell, installed in the belfry when the school was built in 1893 was tolled every morning shortly before nine o’clock from 1893 to 1939. It was concealed inside the belfry and although many former pupils will have heard it many times they have never seen it.
The bell, 22 inches in diameter and 26 inches high has been removed because it was felt that it was unsafe since the fire in the school several months ago damaged roof timbers. Before repair work could be carried out it was decided to remove the bell.
The bell will not be replaced but is to be scrapped.
Pupils of Rossington Street Junior Mixed School, Denaby, gather round their Headmaster, Mr. R. Hall, as they inspect the old school bell which was removed from the school belfry on Tuesday by Mr. J. Greathead, Mr. D. Parker and Mr. A. Greathead.
