Denaby Boxing Show Draws Crowd of 300

Boxing, a largely neglected sport in the district, received a much-needed shot in the arm from Tom Hill Youth Centre’s highly entertaining boxing tournament at Denaby Welfare Institute on Friday.

The bill, which included junior senior and exhibition bouts, was headed by the South Yorkshire amateur Sportsman of the year, Conisbrough’s popular Tommy Joyce.

Tommy, a Scottish international and former junior A. B. A. Champion, representing Doncaster Plant Works, turned in a stylish points victory over J. Hudspeth, of St Oswald’s A. B. C., Gateshead.

Despite the enthusiasm of Hudspeth, Joyce remained cool and collected to pick up the points with a pitter patter of right hand jabs.

And after the bout Tommy was post haste to Doncaster Press Ball, where his Amateur Sportsman title was acknowledged.

The tournament, which drew about 300 spectators, featured 14 fights, with awards presented by Coun. A. Hayward, chairman of Conisbrough Urban Council. It set the seal of success on the efforts of Tom Hill youth centre’s boxing club, formed 12 months ago.

Tom Hill boxers won four out of their five flights.

Lack of support has hampered efforts to put boxing on its feet in the area for some years, and at least one local club has folded as a result.

But area youth officer Mr Alan Henry, head of the organisers, told me: “The tournament has proved well worth while and we were very satisfied with the way things went on Friday.”
