Denaby Boy’s Prompt Action

Rossington Street School, Denaby, is this week especially proud of one of its pupils, Walter Marshall, (11), son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Marshall, of 16, Barnburgh Street, Denaby, who rescued Frank Birks, (5), of 103, Annerley Street, Denaby, from drowning in a dangerous part of the river Don, between Mexborough and Denaby on Sunday.

Walter was having a “dip” in the river on Sunday afternoon.  A number of children were watching from the bank, and Frank, who was one of them, apparently thought he could walk into the water as the swimmers were doing, and did so.

The boy had gone under for the second time when Marshall dived and caught him, and brought him to safety.
