Denaby Cricket Club Whitsuntide Tour

During Whitsuntide the Denaby and Cadeby cricket club enjoyed a very pleasant cricketing tour, which was arranged by Mr H.W.Smith and the reverent E.K. Kirk, of Keeble College, Oxford, who was a former curate at Denaby.

Mansfield 162 for 5 Denaby & Cadeby 214

Their first match was played at Mansfield on Monday.

Play opened very tamely, G.L.Robinson being run out before the game was very old, but Arthur Robinson with a well gathered 80, imparted some stiffening into the side, and the innings eventually ended with 214 on the board.

H.W.Smith played his first game since his accident, and, going in last contributed a useful 19, Narroway running for him. The latter, by the way, did so well behind the wicket that during the Mansfield innings no byes were registered, and two men were stumped.

After the match the team were entertained by the Mansfield Colliery Company, and subsequently departed for Leamington, which place, for some obscure reason known only to Providence and the Railway Company, they did not reach until 2.30 a.m. A lost cricket bag, necessitating a one mile walk on the part of some of the team, added further to their worries, and altogether it was not surprising that they made a poor show against Leamington being dismissed for 93 against 124.

J White (18) and H.W.Smith (17) were the most useful members of the side on this occasion.

The following day was spent in sightseeing at Leamington and Bambury, and eventually the party arrived at Oxford, where they met the reverent S.F. Hawkes (formerly vicar of Denaby) and the reverent E.K.Kirk, and after lunch, at Keble College, opened their two days match against the undergrads.

The college made a very unpromising start, having five wickets down for 47 and seven for 91, but the rot was successfully stopped, and the innings closed for 215, Hurt knocking up 110. G.L.Robinson – who bowled extremely well throughout the tour – took six wickets for 80 runs in 32 overs.

In the match against Pembroke College, (Denaby declared at 158 for 7 wickets,), G.L.Robinson took seven for 16.

The tour concluded with a dinner at Woodstock on Saturday, and the party returned to Denaby on Sunday morning.
