Mexborough Bowler for Denaby
Cricket Club Meeting
The annual meeting of Denaby and Cadeby Cricket, Tennis and Bowls Club was held in the Welfare Institute, Denaby, on Tuesday. Mr. W. Coates presided and opened the meeting with a sympathetic reference to the tragedy at Cadeby Colliery last Saturday, in which four men lost their lives. One of the men, Mr. J. Pearson, had been a keen and enthusiastic member of the tennis section for many years, and had a great share in the revival which had taken place in that section in the years just before the war. The members stood in silence.
The secretary (Mr. J. Humphries) stated that the season had produced nothing spectacular in the team performances, but the committee were pleased with the promise shown by one or two junior members. The first eleven won only four matches, lost eight, and drew two. Six matches were abandoned or cancelled. The second team did rather better, and were placed fourth in the first division of the Doncaster League. Batting honours in the first team were: R. Cory, average 32.16, W. Holland 27.50; second team, G. Williams 24.4, J. Smith 20.0. In bowling J. Richards had the remarkable average of 4.9. The second team winner was E. Wathey, 7.0.
The secretary reported that the club had in hand £34 16s. 8d., a position far better than the club had enjoyed for a great number of years. Income during the year was £3 more than in 1942, but the credit balance of £31 16s. 8d. in the revenue account had converted a deficiency of £8 10s. 4d. to the present satisfactory position. Gate receipts were only £8 18s. 7d., as compared with £25 2s. 1d. during 1942. Subscriptions were down £10, but these reductions in income had been offset by dances.
Mr. Humphries stated that the first eleven would this year compete in the South Yorkshire section of the Yorkshire Council, and the second eleven in the Doncaster League. A. Vickers, the bowler who had been with Mexborough, had promised to assist Denaby, who would again have the services of Rossington, Ellis, and all the other well known players.
At the close of the meeting Mr. G. K. Bateson, the first team captain, presented to R. Cory and H. Hirst a pair of batting gloves each in recognition of their consistent form.
