Denaby Foiled Again
Near Thing for Bentley
Denaby have been unfortunate in not winning their last two games. They have batted first and allowed their opponents ample time to rub off the runs, but they have been content to sit on the splice. At Bentley, Denaby batted 2½ hours declaring at 245 for 7 wickets, whereas Bentley scored 137 for 9 in 2½ hours. At no time did Bentley attempt to force the pace.
Denaby were without Ellis Robinson, who was on duty at Trent Bridge but had the assistance of F Slater, of the Rampton State. Slater did not fare well with the bat but he bowled effectively, taking 3 for 42 in nineteen overs. He will probably assist Denaby in some of their remaining matches. Wright opened with Greenwood and their partnership yielded 80 at the rate of two runs a minute, when Wright was run out for 54, including four fours and two sixes. Foster, Criddle and Slater helped to carry the score to 144 before a stand of 49 was made by Greenwood and Mountney, when the former placed one in the safe hands of Longden. Allen left 30 runs later and Mountney and Probert were not out when the declaration was made, Mountney having batted 49 minutes for 63 (12 fours).
S Slater was the only Bentley batsman to make a serious attempt to get runs, scoring at the rate of one a minute for his 38. Maddison’s 15 was made in almost an hour. Bentley’s ninth wicket fell with the last ball of the match. Apart from F Slater’s performance with the ball, Mountney took 3 for 44 and Probert 1 for 14. For Bentley, Seniscal took 3 for 47.
