Denaby & Cadeby clinch South Riding League title

Thorncliffe, with the threat of relegation staring them face, came up against Denaby and Cadeby at Loundside last Saturday. The visitors wanting just two points to be certain of the championship of division. “A” of the South Riding League and poor old Thorncliffe had five reserves in their line up…

Denaby made 170 all out after a slow start. Thorncliffe replied with 148.

At 61 Denaby´s opener Dodds (30) was caught by Pearson, behind the wicket off Goodwin. Alan French, Thorncliffe´s only fast bowler pulled a muscle in his side and after four overs had to retire.

Ellis (34) fell to Foweather at 73, 10 runs later Goodwin claimed his second victim, Oakley (12)

“Bob” Ward got his first wicket at 144 for five and went on to claim 4 for 10 – a remarkable feat for a schoolboy.

Thorncliffe lost two wickets for 30 and wickets numbers three, four and five fell at 54, 61 and 82. Irwin Goodwin, the number three batsmen hit a fine 77 not out.

Denaby successful bowlers were Lawley (four for 57), N.Pearson (four for 50) and Cory (one for 15)
