Cortonwood Win at Denaby in the Grand Style
It was a very unhappy day for Denaby and Cadeby supporters on Saturday when the club was defeated by Yorkshire Council opponents, Cortonwood. It had taken Denaby 2 ½ hours to score 106; Cortonwood reached 107 for one in just over one hour.
First surprise came in the second over, when, with Denaby score still unopened, opening batsmen, N. Oakley, a high scorer, in the two previous games, was caught behind the wicket by Walls off Wrightson. T. Platts and S. Belton also went for “ducks” and the highest Denaby scorers were A. Ellis (25) and R. Cory (24) who were both caught off Forbes bowling. Peter Downing managed to knock up a good 18 before he was bowled by Wrightson, who was bowling figures were 20 overs, 2 maiden six for 46.
Cortonwood’s Ray Cutts quickly reached his half-century. Layhe reached 46 and finding himself with the chance of hitting a boundary to complete his half-century, he was caught by Platts of Waddington.
Four byes plus a quick single by T.Gawthorpe saw the Denaby total overhauled.
