Dramatic Finale With One Over To Go
Denaby Captain’s Gesture

Many spectators left Tickhill Square on Saturday in the belief that the game between Denaby and Brodsworth would end in a draw, but this was not so.

Instead the game provided an unusual ending. Brodsworth scored 151 in 140 minutes and the Denaby’s captain, Mr W. Criddle, urged his men to go all-out for runs in the 125 minutes allowed them. But the rate of scoring slowed up, and he closed the innings with one over to go, siix wickets to fall and 24 runs for victory. So the game ended in a dramatic victory for Brodsworth.

Denaby were not full strength, their chief absentees being Greenwood and Wright. Brodsworth opened with Baker and Nutton, with only a on the board Baker was caught behind the wicket by Allen off Pegg after scoring five. Nutton and Butler dug themselves in and added 37 when Norton was bowled by Lawton for 25. “Dick” Probert then joined Butler to add 20 runs for the third wicket, when Butler was caught in the country by Batty of Wainwright after scoring 30. The scoreboard read 65 for 3, Probert and Howard added 57 and with Mountford carried the total to 153 before the declaration was made. Probert carried his bat for 55. For Denaby, Pegg took one wicket for 44 runs, Wainwright one for 30, Lawton free for 31 and Morris 1 for 19.

Batty open Denaby’s innings with Wainwright. Foster, a recruit from the second team, joined Wainwright, and the latter scored 33 before being caught by Butler off Seniscal. Allen,in getting his 14, scored faster than Foster, and Pegg did likewise for his 33. Foster was still in when the declaration was made, had made 42,

For Brodsworth, Butler took 1 for 33, Charlesworth 1 for 38, Seniscal 1 for 20, Mountford 1 for 18.
