A fair crowd witnessed the home stars put paid to Rotherham’s account. The match was one full of intense excitement.

Denaby batted first and make none too promising a start, losing A. Robinson, Narraway, and P. Bury when 15 had been telegraphed. G. L. Robinson and J. Esland put a different complexion to the state of affairs and added 37 to the score before Luther was smartly caught by Parkin, of Platts. Esland’s display roused the enthusiasm of the crowd, he treating the Rotherham bowling with a slight courtesy. Smith, Wharton, and Hardy also rendered good assistance to their side. The team were all out for 137. Parkin was the most successful of the Rotherham bowlers, six of the Denaby batsmen falling to him at a cost of eight runs each.

Speculation was rife as to whether the visitors could Denaby’s total as the homesters were without the services of A Smith. Dalton and Ward opened their innings, but at three, Dalton was out to G. L. Robinson of Scott. Ward, with S. Ailswood, made their only stand of the match. After Ward’s departure a procession started, the only other batsman to score being H. Parkin.

Robinson had hard lines twice in not performing the “hat” trick,” as on two occasions he took two wickets with consecutive balls. Scott had better luck, the last three wickets falling to him in the last three balls of the match. The bowling honours were most evenly divided, each bowler taking five wickets for seven runs.
