Denaby do Badly

Denaby & Cadeby 137            Wath 138 for 5

Stott 41*; McKenning 5 wkts                  E.Key 40

Denaby and Cadeby, the runners-up of last season, got off the mark badly on Saturday when they opposed Wath on their own ground.

Batting first, they made a very respectable start, scoring 137 for a completed innings, Stott, with 41 not out, being the highest scorer, while the ever useful Luther made 27, and W Smith got 21.

Wath adopted forcing tactics, going for the runs instead of endeavouring to wear out the bowling, and their policy of determining to be either men or mice was justified by the result, as with a quarter of an hour to spare, they had won by five wickets. E Key with 40, was the chief scorer, G Catton following with 34 not out, while Higgs contributed a dashing 30.

Wath seem to be a team to be reckoned with, and if they could induce Mr Logan, who is now quartered in Wath, superintending the contract of his firm in connection with the new sidings on the GCR, to assist them, they might make things hum. I was told by a prominent Wath cricketer the other day that Mr Logan is a brilliant all-round, but the “snobocracy” have been getting at him, and set him against joining the Wath team.

What this means I leave Wath readers to judge, but I think it a pity if Wath lose the assistance of a good cricketer on account of local jealousies.
