Denaby Again Beaten.
Hargreaves’s Wonderful Effort.

Denaby and Cadeby 144 Wath Athletic. 145 for 8

A great effort by Tom Hargreaves saved Wath at Denaby on Saturday and kept them in the running for the Yorkshire Council championship. Denaby did badly for a time, against the bowling of Williams, and what appeared to be an easy wicket, and but for a stubborn stand by Foster and Luther Robinson, looked like being all out for little more than 100. As it was a total of 144 was small enough with which to face a strong batting side like Wath.

Wath made an even worse show, Jack Morris going for five, and Irving Turner before he had scored, and half the side were out for 65. Down for 66 when Sleight joined Hargreaves, who had opened the innings, and the two stop the rot, and got the score to 106. Then two more wickets fell and brought in Shaw, the waft stumper. He refused to be shifted, and Hargreaves hitting bravely, Wath won by 2 wickets.

Hargreaves, who was missed by Foster 124, played fine cricket. He carried his bat through the innings, and made the winning hit, after passing the century. He made his 105 out of 145 in a little more than two hours, mostly by clever legglances and hearty hitting.

Williams, for Wath, took eight wickets for 64 runs, bowling throughout the Denaby innings. The Denaby innings was made noteworthy by the brilliant fielding of the Wath team. Only one very difficult chance was missed, and Irving Turner, Hargreaves, Morris, Holt and Dewsbury, all made great catches. The best thing about the Denaby batting was a nice little innings by Ernest Wainwright (37).
