Thrills For 600
Denaby and Cadeby 157 Shiregreen 158Car
Six hundred spectators at Denaby on Tuesday were given a thrilling finish when, in the failing light after nine p.m., they saw their side beaten by a single run by Shiregreen.
South Riding League Section “A” runners-up. Shiregreen, who were without their two opening bowlers and regular wicket-keeper, began shakily; they had five down for 39, but free hitting later pushed the score up to 158.
J. Richards (64) and J. Munden (14) gave Denaby a good start, but later batsmen faltered and in the end Denaby were in grave difficulties. E. Waddington, 8. Wragg and H. Newton fought back sturdily, however, and slowly the score climbed towards the Shire-green total. With Waddington (17) out, the atmosphere was tense when last man, captain G. Allen, went to the wicket. A quick two and a single put Denaby only a run behind, but when Allen sent up the ball and he and Newton were making the run which would have levelled the scores, Allen was caught by E. Knighton.
For Shiregreen, who fielded magnificently and never conceded an Inch, W. Duckenfield took seven for 50.
