Twenty Short.
Brodsworth Just Beaten By the Clock
Toneless Innings
With a little longer to bat Brodsworth might have won their opening match of season against Denaby and Cadeby. When stumps were drawn they were in need of 20 runs.
Although Denaby fielded a useful team, they still require the services of a good useful left hand change bowler. Denaby opened fairly weakly. Wainwright was caught at 26 by Davies off Probert, who was last season with Denaby. T Revill, a newcomer from the Doncaster district, joined Greenwood to add a further 15. Wright, and Greenwood made a timely stand of 39, only to see Greenwood bowled by Davies after making 46, which included six boundaries. Wright did not hold the fort long before he left at 102. The next five men did not offer much resistance and were out with only 139 on the board. It fell to H Mee and Porter to make a timely stand of 38 to bring the final score to 167. Mee had four fours in his 19. “Mr Extras” scored more than nine individual batsmen. “He” had 25 to his credit.
Brodsworth had only 14 on the board when two wickets fell to Wainwright, who had opened Denaby’s bowling along with Porter. Howard and Nutton put their backs to the wall to add 39, when Wainwright claimed his third victim in Nutton, who had scored 28. Howard and Frost put on another 33, when Porter got Howard lbw mee who had taken over the ball in from Wainwright, soon made an impression by dismissing Frost and Bailey with the score at 109 for six. Frequent bowling changes could not bring the downfall of E Mountford, who was undefeated for 37. Stumps were drawn at 147 for eight wickets.
For Brodsworth. Probert took three wickets for 21 runs and Davies five for 51. For Denaby. Wainwright had five for 21, Porter one for 18 and Mee two for 32.
