Denaby’s opening match with Brodsworth produced a keen finish and a very open result. At the close Brodsworth had two wickets in hand and were 11 runs in arrears.

Denaby’s batting was patchy but on the whole the opening batsmen justified their reputations, though Greenwood did not stay long. It was the “tail” which prevented the visitors from knocking up a big score, for with only five wickets down they had 155 runs on the board.

Ellis Robinson made an auspicious start with the bat, passing the half-century, while Wainwright was only five short of his fifty, and Dick Probert played a resourceful innings. Going in at number five he carried out his bat for 29.

Denaby eventually finished with the useful total of 172.

E. Baker, however, who opened the Brodsworth innings with H. Frost, stayed to score 73, though the home side lost some cheap wickets, and Bellaby, too, helped to make a stand before he fell a victim to Dickinson, the young County colt.

Dickinson, who showed promise, had 1 for 26. Ellis Robinson was most successful with the ball, taking four wickets, three of them clean bowled. Dick Probert had two, including the troublesome Baker.
