Denaby’s Slow But Sound Start

Denaby 185 for 9       Collegiate 135

Denby turned the tables on Sheffield Collegiate by  defeating  them at Tickhill Square before a small attendance.

Denaby had first knock and neither Greenwood nor Wainwright exerted themselves. The opening bowlers, Maddox and Ibbetson, sent down eight overs yielding only 17 runs

The pace pf the batsmen can easily be summed up—they scored 34 runs in the first 50 minutes. The. half century mark was reached just over one hour and this brought Denaby’s’s first wicket down. Wainwright, who had made 31, was caught by Elliott of PG Barber. Then at 67 Greenwood was the next to go.  He bad scored 47, including four fours before being bowled by Elliott. The fourth wicket fell at 129, Robinson being  caught by Buck off Elliott for 15. Berry and Hobson appeared too eager to get runs and arising from this Hobson mistimed a straight one from Elliott to see his stumps knocked back. Berry, who has risen from the second team, played a sterling innings for his 33, being run out at 159. Bateson, who has not been able to get going properly this season, end Mee added 21 for the seventh -wicket, thus bringing the total to 180: At this total both batsmen were out, and when Parry was bowled P G Barber for a “duck” at 185 the innings was brought to a close. For Collegiate, Elliott took 4 for 65, P G Barber 3 for 39 and Haddocks 1 for 32.

The Denaby bowlers began; their task in earnest, success coming their way when Sheffield had scored six, Buck being adjudged lbw to Wainwright for five. Wilson soon followed; he was bowled.by Porter for two at 17. Ogley, a former Denaby cricketer, then joined PG Barber, and the pair carried the total to 54 before the latter was sent back by Porter for 23. Having scored six fours in his 37, Ogley played into the hands of Bateson Parry at 76. BH Barber had scored a single off the next six and Bateson upset his stumps. One and later Parry did likewise to Jenkinson for another single. Thus Collegiate at six wickets down for 83 runs.

Then followed some stubborn batting, especially by car and it seemed that he and Maddox would back time out, but Maddox stepped in front of a straight one from Robinson for nine. Neither Ibbotson or Marsh added to the total and Carr carried his bat out for 21 in a total of 136.

For Denaby Porter took five for 50, Parry two for 14, Bateson one for 21 and Robinson 1 for 5.
